Who Let the Dogs Out? Rough, Rough, Rough, Rough!

You have just three weeks or so to play Santa Ana and Twin Warriors golf clubs before the club pros of America descend on it for the PGA”s Professional National Championship. A word of advice: Sharpen that accuracy thing.

The supers at both courses are growing the rough long — in excess of 8 inches, in order to be able to swoop in and cut it to a uniform 4 inches in time for the event. So, between now and when they close both courses to public play, life’s a bitch if you’re not in the fairway.

Let’s just say a couple of single-digit handicappers were humiliated this week, watching shots from the rough from 150 out go no farther than 70 yards. “Hello, and let’s welcome Mr. 3-wood to the tee box.” The money on this day went to Ross Nettles, a wolf grazing among sheep, thanks to that hitting the fairway thing.

If you’re up to the challenge, both courses are in superb condition. The greens are running fast and true. The rough, however, will separate the players among us. It is a rare opportunity that regular players get to play, check that, endure, a course conditioned for a major championship like Santa Ana and Twin are right now.

You have until June 21 to play Santa Ana, and until June 24 to play Twin. After that they’re closed until the PNC is over. SCG’s advice: Move up a set of tees.

Volunteer at PNC, Get Cheap Golf

Another hundred or so volunteers are needed to work the PGA’s Professional National Championship June 28-July 1 at Santa Ana and Twin Warriors golf clubs.

Journal MIA on Lobos’ NCAA Finish

It is perplexing that a newspaper of the high caliber of the Albuquerque Journal completely missed the final results of the NCAA Division 1 Women’s Golf National Championships.

The final round was Friday. The Lobos’ eventual finish was posted online by 4 p.m. local time Friday, while the top three teams headed into the final three holes. Complete results were available by 5 p.m. local, but Saturday’s Journal sports section had no mention of the results — not a single word.

Arizona Sate University won the title, by the way, followed by UCLA eight shots back and Southern California one stroke further back. The lobos finished 60 strokes behind ASU.

The highest-finishing Lobo, junior Britney Choy, ended the four-day event in a tie for 32nd place among individual players. Albuquerque native Katie Kempter, playing for the University of Denver, finished 39th individually.

SCG will be posting some video interviews with the 2008-2009 team shortly.

ABQ Muni Phone Campaign Begins

The grass-roots movement to improve playing conditions at Albuquerque’s municipal courses is gathering steam as photocopied fliers are finding their way to courses around town.

“Los Altos and Arroyo del Oso golf courses are short eight maintenance people because the city has a hiring freeze,” say the fliers. “Your greens fees pay for the operation of the golf courses; this is not a tax or General Fund issue. Your fees are generating enough money to pay for the needed maintenance people.”

The fliers encourages golfers to call their Albuquerque city councilor. The main city council number is (505) 768-3100.
