Letter from the Gulf

Editor’s Note: Duncan Millar is a PGA professional with the Gulf Shores Golf Association, a collection of top-quality golf courses clustered around Gulf Shores and Orange Beach, Ala., a vacation destination on the Gulf of Mexico renowned for great seafood, fishing, white sugar-sand beaches and plenty of affordable lodging.

We followed up on an September 2009 golf-travel assignment for the Chicago Sun-Times by asking Duncan how the area is holding up since the BP oil spill. Surprisingly, he replied it’s not the oil but the national news media that is keeping people away. Here’s his report:

2017 U.S. Open Goes to Erin Hills

The USGA has also announced its intention to award the 2018 U.S. Amateur and 2019 U.S. Open The United States Golf Association has named Erin Hills, a daily-fee public golf course about 35 miles northwest of Milwaukee in the town of Erin, Wis., as the site of the 2017 U.S. Open.Championships to Pebble Beach (Calif.) Golf Links.
