Buffalo Thunder launches Deals for Service-industry Workers

Buffalo Thunder Resort and Casino, parent property of Towa Golf Resort, has launched a new “Sin Night,” a Monday night promotion to honor New Mexico’s service industry.

“We invite New Mexico’s hospitality-industry workers to join us at Buffalo Thunder,” said Paul Aragon, Pojoaque Puebklo’s director of hospitality. “For those individuals working in local restaurants, bars, spas, hotels, shops, museums, tour companies, or any other segment of the hospitality business, we’ll be offering a 25 percent discount.”

The service industry will be offered a 25 percent discount off of food at the Red Sage and Turquoise Trail and weekly drink promotions at Red Sage and Blue Tower. The Sin City Monday night events will include karaoke contests at Blue Tower where winners will receive cash prizes.

Buffalo Thunder is 15 minutes north of Santa Fe on U.S. 285.

UNM Regents Delay Master Plan Action

The University of New Mexico Board of Regents has delayed action on a master plan that preserves the UNM North Golf Course following criticism by Albuquerque City Councilor Ike Benton.

Public comments on the plan, published on Aug. 11 in draft form, will be accepted through Sept. 9. The regents are expected to act on Sept. 29 on a plan developed by the architecture firm Dekker Perrich Sabatini to preserve the golf course as “reserve lands” and to improve the walking-running track around the course’s perimeter.

The master plan, when approved, will guide the unversity’s development strategy for the next 10 years.

Santa Ana Designer Dies

Golf course architect Ken Killian, president of the American Society of Golf Course Architects in 1986-87, and designer of Santa Ana Golf Club, died on Sept. 20 at his home in Granada Hills, Calif. Killian was 78. Killian also designed the Mission in Odessa, Texas.

Paa-Ko Ridge No. 11 on GolfWorld Magazine’s Readers’ Choice List

Paa-Ko Ridge Golf Club is No. 11 on GolfWorld’s magazine’s Readers’ Choice List of the top 50 public golf courses in the United States. It is the only Sun Country region golf course on the annual compilation of the magazine’s readers’ favorites among public, private and resort courses.

In the public category, Forest Dunes Golf Club in Roscommon, Wis., is No. 1, followed by Orange County National in Winter Garden. Fla. In the resort category, Kiawah Island Golf Resort in South Carolina was No. 1, followed by Bandon Dunes Golf Resort in Oregon. Among private courses, Oak Hill Country Club in Rochester, N.Y., was No. 1, followed by Augusta National in Georgia.

Paa-Ko scored highly in overall value and quality of golf, but lost points for its lack of a clubhouse, nearby off-course amenities and dining.
