Update: January Romero in NYC

New Mexico high school golf phenom January Romero, who won a Sun Country Amateur Golf Association P.J. Boatwright scholarship to Yale University in 2002, has signed on as an assistant golf coach at New York University.

Romero, 25, who was likely headed to a career as a lawyer on Wall Street, has shifted gears and is now working on an MBA in non-profit management and public administration — and could eventually wind up in New Mexico running a kids’ golf camp, she says.

To read the full story about Romero’s abrupt life change, grab a copy of Sun Country Golf”s print edition, now on newsstands.

To catch a glimpse of her role in the 2001 KNME-TV documentary, “Why I Play,” produced by Sun Country Golf Editor Dan Vukelich, click here.

Romero’s portion is about three minutes and 45 seconds into the video clip. How many people can you you recognize in the documentary?

The entire 26-minute public-television special will be posted shortly.
