SCG Wins National Photo Award

Sun Country Golf’s editor, Dan Vukelich, won an “Outstanding Achiever” award from the International Network of Golf for his photo, “Missing Right,” which appeared in the July-August 2009 issue of the magazine.

The photo depicted the first tee of the PGA of America’s Professional National Championship at Twin Warriors Golf Club last July. It finished second to “Bagpiper at Spanish Bay,” a photo by Joann Dost, which appeared in Fairways + Greens magazine.

Vukelich  shot “Missing Right” on deadline after spending the morning at the PNC. The magazine’s print date had been pushed back to get the PNC results into the issue.  “I was following the leaders, looking for story lines,” Vukelich said.

As he was leaving the course, he saw the  composition presented by the first tee, the starter’s tent, the players, their caddies and the Sandia Mountains and began shooting as several players teed off.

“The photo tells the story of a player who has just hit and obviously hit a poor shot right,” Vukelich said. “It contrasts the pageantry of the first tee with the pathos of the player’s very first shot of the day going awry, which is why I think the ING judges liked it. I was struck by the contrast between energy of the player’s caddie, whom I knew was likely a volunteer, and the others on the tee.”

The ING is a national media-based organization that brings together elements of the golf industry in periodic meetings. The 2009 media awards were announced at the PGA Merchandise Show in Orlando.
