ABQ Muni Phone Campaign Begins

The grass-roots movement to improve playing conditions at Albuquerque’s municipal courses is gathering steam as photocopied fliers are finding their way to courses around town.

“Los Altos and Arroyo del Oso golf courses are short eight maintenance people because the city has a hiring freeze,” say the fliers. “Your greens fees pay for the operation of the golf courses; this is not a tax or General Fund issue. Your fees are generating enough money to pay for the needed maintenance people.”

The fliers encourages golfers to call their Albuquerque city councilor. The main city council number is (505) 768-3100.

Golfers Rebellion Forming

Albuquerque golfers of muni courses who agreed to greens-fee increases last year and have yet to see any improvement in course conditions are organizing. A petition campaign is showing up at the city’s three 18-hole courses urging players to call or e-mail their city councilors to demand an explanation for why the Golf Course Maintenance Division, an enterprise fund, is subject to a hiring freeze that is leading to lower maintenance levels.
