State’s Ams, Pros Elect New Boards

The two governing bodies of golf in Sun Country elected new officers in early December. Ronne Mercer is the new president of the Sun Country Amateur Golf Association. Grant Dalpes is the new president of the Sun Country Section PGA.

The amateur and professional organizations remain separate but have teamed under one roof to market golf in New Mexico.

Sierra del Rio Offers 2-for-1 Stay-and-play Special for $80

Turtleback Mountain Resort in Elephant Butte is offering a 2-for-1 stay-and-play package for $80 plus tax through Dec. 5 that includes a round at the award-winning Sierra del Rio Golf Course, which represents some of the best golf in New Mexico.

The special is part of the resort’s lot sales program and includes a tour of the property, one round per person, an overnight stay at a rental house, use of a golf cart during the day. The sales tour lasts about 90 minutes and is aimed at couples.

North-South Sr. Challenge Seeks Entrants for September Event

The North-South Senior Challenge is seeking prospective entrants for its Ryder Cup-style event Sept. 26-28 at Desert Greens Golf Course in Albuquerque.

The three-round event features two 18-player teams from Northern and Southern New Mexico age 50 or older. There will be three competitive matches: four-ball, alternate-shot and individual. To print the entry form, click here. [Read more →]

Tim Madigan Wins WAC Indy Title

New Mexico State University’s Tim Madigan, who led the Aggies to a third straight Western Atheletic Conference golf championship, won the individual title and was named player of the year for the Western Athletic Conference. Madigan was also named to the first team All-WAC.

Madigan, from Rio Rancho, also tied Tiger Woods’ scoring record at Rio Secco Golf Club in Henderson, Nev., with a 64 in the first round with a double bogey on the 16 hole.
