Lobo Letzig Paired with Tiger

Former Lobo golfer Michael Letzig will be in the final group Sunday at the Buick Open, going for his first PGA Tour win and facing none other than Tiger Woods.

Letzig led for much of the day Saturday, but gave up two strokes on the 18th hole with a jitters-caused double bogey, sending him to the clubhouse at 16 under, one stroke behind Woods going into Day Four of the 50th and possibly final playing of the Buick Open, which has lost its title sponsor.

Letzig, who turned pro in 2002, has played in 20 events and won $700,000 in 2009, which puts him at 74th on the PGA Tour money list. He’s made 19 cuts. He finished 8th in the RBC Canadian Open last week and has finished in the top 25 seven times this year.

The Buick’s final-day action starts at 11 a.m. Mountain on The Golf Channel, then switches over to CBS at 1 p.m. Mountain. Woods and Letzig go off at 11:50 a.m. Mountain. Oddly, like Saturday, a half hour of the tournament is not broadcast on television.

The new tees, dubbed “Lobo tees,” are being built on Nos. 5, 7, 11, 13 and 18. The biggest change comes on No. 7, where 54 yards are being added to bring the hole’s total length to 522 yards.

Lobo Golfers Turn Pro

Lobo seniors Steve Saunders and Parker Pemberton will turn pro at the Socorro Open later this week. Miguel Griego, another Lobo alumnus, was expected to defend his Soccoro title when the event kicks off  Friday.

Two other Lobo seniors, Brandon Putnam and Guillermo Chavez, were expected to retain their amateur status.

Putnam was granted entry into the Pacific Coast Amateur team by virtue of his Sun Country Amateur Golf Association Match Play victory last week. Putnam was also expected to play in the SCAGA New Mexico-West Texas Amateur Championship July 17-19 at Paa-Ko Ridge Golf Club.

Journal MIA on Lobos’ NCAA Finish

It is perplexing that a newspaper of the high caliber of the Albuquerque Journal completely missed the final results of the NCAA Division 1 Women’s Golf National Championships.

The final round was Friday. The Lobos’ eventual finish was posted online by 4 p.m. local time Friday, while the top three teams headed into the final three holes. Complete results were available by 5 p.m. local, but Saturday’s Journal sports section had no mention of the results — not a single word.

Arizona Sate University won the title, by the way, followed by UCLA eight shots back and Southern California one stroke further back. The lobos finished 60 strokes behind ASU.

The highest-finishing Lobo, junior Britney Choy, ended the four-day event in a tie for 32nd place among individual players. Albuquerque native Katie Kempter, playing for the University of Denver, finished 39th individually.

SCG will be posting some video interviews with the 2008-2009 team shortly.
