First Ace by a Woman at Butterfield

A second hole-in-one in less than three weeks was recorded at El Paso’s Butterfield Trail Golf Club by Kathy Lawson of El Paso, the first woman to score an ace at the club, said Butterfield Head Professional, Brian Lopez.

Lawson used an 8-iron on the Par 3 7th hole of the course designed by Tom Fazio.  Her shot was witnessed by Pete Alvidrez.

Members of the sun Country Amateur Golf Association who score a hole-in-one can receive a framable certificate from SCAGA. For more information, call (505) 897-0864.

Madigan Heads Home from U.S. Am

Tim Madigan made bogey on the first hole of a 27-man play-off for four remaining spots in the U.S. Amateur Match Play portion Wednesday morning, and did not advance.

The format was three groups of four and three groups of five, playing No. 14 at Southern Hills Country Club.  ” We were in the last group of five and there were two birdies in the groups before us, so we needed par to move on,” said father Steve, who was in the gallery as a spectator while Tim’s cousin, Jim Heimerle, looped for him.

“He missed the fairway right and the ball sat down in the Bermuda, and he made a nice chip to five feet, but missed the putt,” he said.

Madigan’s failure to advance left Sun Country with none of its three qualifiers in the field of 64, which was on the course today in match play that continues through Sunday at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Okla.

Madigan Qualifies for U.S. Amateur

Rio Rancho’s Tim Madigan tied for low medalist at the U.S. Amateur qualifier at the Whirlwind Golf Club in Chandler, Ariz., earlier this week with rounds of 64-70 for a two-day total 10 under par.

The New Mexico State University Aggie golfer  was one of five qualifiers for the national championship out of the Arizona event, held Aug. 4.

The U.S. Amateur will be held Aug. 4-30 at Southern Hills Country Club and Cedar Ridge Country Club in Tulsa, Okla. A field of 312 golfers will be cut to 64 golfers after two rounds of stroke play, who then will advance through match play at Southern Hills. The nationally televised 36-hole final is set for Sunday, Aug. 30.
