Tim Madigan Wins WAC Indy Title

New Mexico State University’s Tim Madigan, who led the Aggies to a third straight Western Atheletic Conference golf championship, won the individual title and was named player of the year for the Western Athletic Conference. Madigan was also named to the first team All-WAC.

Madigan, from Rio Rancho, also tied Tiger Woods’ scoring record at Rio Secco Golf Club in Henderson, Nev., with a 64 in the first round with a double bogey on the 16 hole.

Madigan is one of the fiercest competitors in golf in New Mexico. For more on Madigan’s and the NMSU men’s golf team’s accomplishments, click here for the NNMSU Sports Information summary.

Madigan, Sanchez Named SCAGA Players of the Year

The Sun Country Amateur Golf Association named Tim Madigan and Lee Sanchez its 2009 players of the year.

Sanchez of Santa Fe completed his first season as a senior player. He won the New Mexico-West Texas Senior Amateur Championship at Sonoma Ranch Golf Club and was on the winning team at the SCAGA Senior Four Ball Championship at Taos Country Club.

Madigan of Rio Rancho won Player of the Year in the Championship Division. He performed well in every Sun Country event in 2009 and qualified for both the U.S. Public Links and the U.S. Amateur.

Madigan was in a close race with Nick Geyer of Albuquerque, but Madigan’s win in August at the Sun Country Player’s Championship at Isleta Eagle Golf Course put him over the top.

Madigan Heads Home from U.S. Am

Tim Madigan made bogey on the first hole of a 27-man play-off for four remaining spots in the U.S. Amateur Match Play portion Wednesday morning, and did not advance.

The format was three groups of four and three groups of five, playing No. 14 at Southern Hills Country Club.  ” We were in the last group of five and there were two birdies in the groups before us, so we needed par to move on,” said father Steve, who was in the gallery as a spectator while Tim’s cousin, Jim Heimerle, looped for him.

“He missed the fairway right and the ball sat down in the Bermuda, and he made a nice chip to five feet, but missed the putt,” he said.

Madigan’s failure to advance left Sun Country with none of its three qualifiers in the field of 64, which was on the course today in match play that continues through Sunday at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Okla.

Madigan Makes U.S. Am Cut, Faces Playoff

Tim Madigan of Rio Rancho tied for 61st with a 3-over round in Day 2 of the U.S. Amateur Championship this afternoon at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Okla., but faced a 27-man player for the four remaining spots in the match-play field.

The two other Sun Country qualifiers, Matt Williams of Albuquerque and Guillermo Chavez of Clovis, faltered and did not advance to match play.

Madigan posted a 5-over 75 on Day 1 at Cedar Ridge Country Club and moved over to Southern Hills for Round 2 Tuesday afternoon, where he posted a trouble-free 1-under on the front, which moved him up more than 20 spots to about 16th place.

The back nine, however, was a horrifying slide of five bogeys and a single birdie. He shot a 4-over 39 to limp in at 3-over for the day. The USGA scheduled the playoff to begin at 7 a.m. CDT, starting on the 14th hole of Southern Hills.

Williams of Albuquerque, executive director of the Sun Country Amateur Golf Association, finished Monday’s round at 6-over in a tie for 114th, and was only two shots behind the cut line, but fell to 16-over after a second-day score of 78 and finished in a tie for 177th.

Chavez, the third Sun Country qualifier, finished with a two-day total of 81-82, which put him in a tie for 287th.

The difficulty and pressure of Day 2 was seen by dramatic slippage across the field. Leader after Round 2 was Tim Jackson of Germantown, Tenn., at even. He had started the day at 2-under.

The Golf Channel picks up TV coverage Wednesday. Matches continues until the field of 64 is reduced to two finalists on Sunday.
